Cuisines of the Sun 2001
"Adventures in Paradise:
The Sizzle of a Summertime Celebration
Hawaii
July 21-25, 2001
What It Is:
For the 12th consecutive
year,
The Mauna Lani
Bay Hotel and Bungalows will host
its highly successful
"Cuisines of the Sun" culinary
extravaganza July
21-25, 2001. Highlighting cuisines
of sunny climates,
the event pairs the best of two
worlds: the cuisine
of world-renowned chefs and
limited quantity
wines from some of the world's most
cutting-edge producers.
Participants will be privy to fun-filled
hands-on cooking
classes, provocative wine discussions and feasts
prepared la minute
under the stars.
Hailed by media
as "one of the country's top culinary events," the
stage is set to
dazzle foodies with an outstanding lineup of chefs and
winemakers. We
start with the theme, "Adventures in Paradise:
The Sizzle of a
Summertime Celebration," emphasizing the
special joys associated
with the summer months. This is the time of
year when we rejoice
in the glories of summer with such blissful
activities as backyard
barbecues, beach parties and picnics. And of
course, in the
summertime, we always go on vacation.
Keeping these thoughts
in mind, we created our evening "themes;" a
barbecue, beach
party, picnic and vacation. Of course, our take on
these activities
is utterly upscale and tweaked to meet "Cuisines of the
Sun" unparalleled
high standards.
In other words,
don't expect a mundane barbecue or picnic. Once we
begin brainstorming
with our superstar chefs and wrap our collective
culinary arms around
these subjects, they take on entirely new and
extraordinary meanings.
You can count on "Cuisines" highlighting the
gastronomic bounty
of the summer season.
For the lineup of
chefs starring in "Cuisines" 2001, we announce one
of the founders
of modern southwest cooking, Robert Del Grande
of Café
Annie in Houston, continually rated #1 in the prestigious
Zagat Restaurant
Survey; Lee Hefter, the über-talented chef of
Wolfgang Puck's
Spago in Beverly Hills and recipient of Food &
Wine magazine's
10 Best New Chefs in America distinction;
award-winning chef
George Morrone of San Francisco's hottest
restaurant, Fifth
Floor; Marcus Samuelsson, chef extraordinaire
from Aquavit in
New York City; Roy Yamaguchi, the father of
Hawaii Regional
Cuisine and owner of Roy's Restaurants worldwide;
Marcel Desaulniers
of Trellis Restaurant in Williamsburg, Virginia,
recipient of the
1999 James Beard Award for "Outstanding Pastry
Chef in America"
and author of many cookbooks, including his latest,
Death by Chocolate
Cakes; and Alan Wong, superstar chef of Alan
Wong's Restaurant
in Honolulu and a James Beard Foundation award
winner for "Best
Chef of the Northwest Region."
And to prove that
husband and wives can and do work well together,
"Cuisines of the
Sun" is proud to welcome three sets of chef duets to
its esteemed roster:
Ben and Karen Barker of Magnolia Grill in
Durham, North Carolina
- Ben was named "Best Chef of the
Southeast" and
Karen was nominated for "Best Pastry Chef in
America" in the
2000 James Beard Foundation awards; Hiro Sone
and Lissa Doumani
from Napa Valley's top-rated Terra, recipient
of the Wine Spectator
"Award of Excellence" for wine list and service
and a top-ten ranking
in the Bay Area's Zagat Restaurant Guide; and
Johanne Killeen
and George Germon of Al Forno in Providence,
Rhode Island; winners
of the James Beard Foundation award for
"Best Chef of the
Northeast" and triple nominees (the last three years
running) for "Most
Outstanding Restaurant in America."
"Cuisines of the
Sun" will continue on its unique path by showcasing
innovative, world-renowned
winemakers who produce limited
amounts of boutique
wines and set the trends for other
beverage-makers
to follow. Five prominent winemakers will be
featured in the
2001 program, including Charles and Lili Hsi Thomas
from Jackson Family
Farms in Oakville, California; Paul and
Monica Fürst
of Weingut Rudolf Fürst in Bürgstadt, Germany;
Marcel Giesen of
Giesen Wine Estate in Christchurch, New
Zealand; James
Hall and Anne Moses of Patz & Hall Wine
Company in Rutherford,
California; and Oliver and Margaret
Humbrecht of Zind-Humbrecht
in Turckheim, France.
